Biography of Prof. Joseph H. Koo
Dr. Joseph H. Koo is Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM), an Associate Fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and Past-Chair of the AIAA Materials Technical Committee. He has over 45 years of industrial and academic experience in program and engineering management. He is Senior Research Scientist/Research Professor/Director of Polymer Nanocomposites Technology Lab in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX (www.me.utexas.edu/~koo). Dr. Koo is the founder of KAI, LLC (www.koo-associates.com) and currently serves as Vice President and CTO. He is a Society of Advanced Materials Processing and Engineering (SAMPE, USA, www.sampe.org) Fellow and Chairman of the SAMPE Nanotechnology Committee. He serves on the advisory board of the U.S. National Space and Missile Materials Symposium (NSMMS, USA). He is the Editor-in-Chief of Flame Retardancy and Thermal Stability of Materials, www.degruyter.com/view/j/flret). He specializes in polymer nanocomposites: processing, characterization, and applications, such as ablatives for thermal protection systems and solid rocket motors, additively-manufactured (AM) polymers, AM flame-retardant polymers, AM ultra-performance polymers, AM functionally graded radomes for hypersonic vehicles, fire resistant fabrics & textiles, thermally conductive polymer matrix composites, sensor to measure in-situ ablation recession and thermal properties, sensors to measure char strength, thermophysical properties characterization, material response ablation modeling, modeling of polymer degradation kinetics, and insensitive munitions technology of solid rocket motors. Dr. Koo has over 650 papers/presentations/patents in materials, thermal, and optical science disciplines, include 4 books and 15 book chapters. His 4th book on “Ablation Science and Technology” commissioned by Cambridge University Press is forthcoming in September 2021.
